Caesar Salad: History, Recipe and 5 Ideas with Caesar Dressing
Where does Caesar salad come from? Discover its surprising history, a quick recipe, and five ideas using creamy Caesar dressing.
A classic that always works
Crisp romaine lettuce, golden-brown croutons, freshly shaved Parmesan, and a creamy, tangy dressing: Caesar salad is one of those classics that makes your mouth water just by reading the menu. It is just as suitable for a quick lunch as it is for dinner, can be served on its own or topped with grilled chicken, and always feels a little bit like a visit to your favorite restaurant.
Caesar salad has been a staple on American menus for many decades. You can find it in steakhouses, bistros, and restaurants from Maine to California. Its history, however, begins in a place many would not expect – in Tijuana, Mexico.
What goes into a classic Caesar salad?
A Caesar salad does not rely on having as many ingredients as possible. It is the interplay of a few components that makes it so unmistakable:
- crisp romaine lettuce
- toasted croutons
- finely shaved or grated Parmesan
- creamy Caesar dressing
- freshly ground black pepper, if desired
Tomatoes, cucumbers, and corn are not traditionally part of it. However, the salad can easily be expanded with grilled chicken, shrimp, or salmon to make a complete meal.

Quick Caesar salad recipe
This recipe serves four as a side dish or two as a light main course. With grilled chicken, it becomes a classic Chicken Caesar Salad.
Ingredients
- 2 romaine lettuce hearts
- 80 g croutons
- 50 g Parmesan cheese, in a block
- 5–6 tbsp Stonewall Kitchen Caesar Dressing
- freshly ground black pepper
- optional: 300 g chicken breast fillet
- optional: a few lemon wedges for serving
Preparation
- Wash the romaine lettuce, dry thoroughly, and cut into bite-sized pieces. Some smaller leaves can be left whole.
- If using chicken, season the meat, cook in a grill pan or on the grill, and then cut into strips.
- Place the romaine lettuce in a large bowl. Add five tablespoons of Caesar dressing and toss gently. The lettuce should be evenly coated but remain crisp.
- Fold in the croutons and some of the Parmesan.
- Arrange on plates, place the chicken strips on top if desired, and shave the remaining Parmesan fresh over the top.
- Serve with black pepper and a lemon wedge.
Our tip: Add the croutons just before serving. This keeps them nice and crunchy and provides the perfect contrast to the creamy dressing.

Caesar salad in a jar: practical for lunch and meal prep
For a Caesar salad in a jar, put the dressing at the very bottom. This is followed by firm ingredients like chicken and Parmesan. Add the romaine lettuce higher up; it is best to pack the croutons separately. Shake the jar before eating or pour everything into a bowl.
This layering keeps the salad crisp longer and makes Caesar salad an uncomplicated lunch on the go. More ideas for salads and lunch dishes in a jar can be found in our article on meal prep with Ball Mason Jars.
5 ideas with Caesar dressing – far beyond salad
An opened bottle of Caesar dressing doesn't have to wait for your next green salad. Its savory flavor is perfect for many simple dishes from American everyday cuisine.
1. Chicken Caesar Wrap
Place romaine lettuce, grilled chicken, shaved Parmesan, and a little Caesar dressing into a large tortilla wrap. Roll tightly and cut diagonally in half. This makes for a quick lunch at the office, a picnic, or a relaxing evening on the sofa.
To keep the wrap from getting too soggy, dry the lettuce well beforehand and use the dressing sparingly. You can also serve a small side bowl for dipping.
2. Caesar Pasta Salad
Let cooked short pasta cool down and mix with romaine lettuce, Parmesan, black pepper, and Caesar dressing. Grilled chicken or crispy fried bacon go well with this.
For a summer buffet, fold in the lettuce leaves and croutons just before serving. This keeps the pasta salad fresh and gives it more crunch.
3. Caesar Flatbread
Top a crispy flatbread with grilled chicken, red onions, and some cheese. After baking, add fresh romaine lettuce and drizzle with Caesar dressing. This is where warm, crispy pizza meets a fresh Caesar salad.
4. Savory Sandwiches
Caesar dressing can replace mayonnaise on a sandwich. It goes particularly well with fried chicken, turkey, lettuce, and tomato. Parmesan or a sharp cheese further complement the dressing's savory notes.
Even a classic club sandwich gets a surprising Caesar-style twist with it.
5. Creamy Dip
Serve the dressing directly as a dip for vegetable sticks, roasted potatoes, chicken tenders, or crusty bread. A small bowl is enough for a large snack platter – its intense flavor needs no further preparation.
