The legendary Red Barns - red barns or farms - characterize the American landscape. In the 18th century, the large wooden barns were still colorless, but the first farmers from Pennsylvania turned to the red dye they made themselves - Barn Red. It was made from a mixture of milk, lime and iron ore. The dye retained the heat longer and at the same time preserved the wood better.
Our Milk Paints from American Heritage are similar organic paints that the Shakers used to make themselves. They contain casein and pigments.
I love red barns because I have to stop at every red barn and take photos. They are often found in the Midwest and New England, although there are also white barns here that delight my photographer's heart.
